PreGame:
Switzerland: The mere thought of what happened in this similar fixture four years ago to the day sends shivers down the Swiss fans back. In the last World Cup the Swiss comfortably beat Spain and looked like they could do something in that world cup. They went into their last game needing to beat a very poor Honduras team by two goals to qualify for the next round. They didn’t. In fact they played out a nil nil bore draw, and it was such a shameful way to exit the tournament that I am sure today’s team wont need any extra motivation to beat Honduras this time round.
At the moment there goal difference is an unhealthy -2, thanks to the French, but I am not so sure it will make much of a difference to them as long as they stick to the task and beat Honduras. I can’t see Ecuador beating France. If somehow they did pull of a shock in that game, then Switzerland might be in trouble, and in need of scoring a bagful of goals. But for now we can take it that they should beat Honduras and rely on France not losing to Ecuador.
Hopefully Behrami doesn’t start giving the ball away cheaply today, and maybe try and score a goal tonight in what should be a nice victory for the Swiss and finally get them motoring along in the competition. Remember they were a seeded team in this World Cup
Honduras, who lost their first two games, can still amazingly qualify today if France continue their fine form and hammer Ecuador and they themselves beat Switzerland. Two possibilities that could happen.
The good news for the Hondurans is that their best player, the midfielder, Wilson Palacios is back tonight after serving out his ban. He is one of the few players on their team that has the skill and ability to conjure up a goal chance.
I do wonder, though, how many yellow cards Honduras will pick up tonight as they seem to be a team that love hacking at other teams players. They might as well go out in style and pick up another red card!
A more detailed review on Switzerland here and on Honduras here
Switzerland won 3-0 but their performance wasn’t anything to get too excited about. Against a very poor team they gave away numerous chances at the other end of the pitch, and if it wasn’t for such bad Honduran forward play, and the wonderful Shaqiri up front, Switzerland could just as easily be heading home.
The Swiss took an early lead when Shaqiri scored with a 25-yard long range strike. Shaqiri had a cracking game, looked lively all game, and just after the half hour mark he got on the score sheet again. The second goal was a perfectly worked move from the back to the front, with Rodriguez clearing the ball out of defence passing it to Drmic in midfield who put Shaqiri in with an exquisite through ball. Shaqiri’s first touch was excellent, brilliantly setting himself up to calmly slot past the onrushing Honduras Goalkeeper. Brilliant.
Another perfectly weighted Josip Drmic pass to Shaqiri made it 3-0 to the Swiss near the end of the game. A lovely hat trick from Xherdan Shaqiri, well deserved for the Bayern Munich hit man.
At the back things were not so rosy for the Swiss. Djourou played one of his worst games for Switzerland. Pretty much every time the ball went into the Swiss central defence he was at fault for giving away chance after chance. He was a big hole in the central defence of Switzerland and luckily for him the always reliable Rodriguez had to bail him out on a few occasions. Benaglio in goals also looked very dodgy, and seemed to be missing a lot of simple crosses. Very worrying for the Swiss, and something they need to rectify fairly quickly for the next game against Argentina and Messi.
As I have mentioned before, I think that Swiss team is carrying a lot of passengers. Xhaka is a dead loss, little movement, not much creativity. Inler another that offers very little, and I would even be critical of Drmic, apart from the two assists, he looked like he would never score himself. Weak, and not going to trouble too many defenders. Shaqiri bailed out his team today.
For Honduras, Bengtson should have scored with Benaglio all over the place, and with the whole goal to shoot at Jerry Palacios went down very easy hoping to get a soft penalty, when scoring might have been easier. Their main attacking threat was when Chávez came on in the second half. He whipped in a number of crosses and they should have scored from at least one of them. Wonder why Chávez wasnt given more game time in this World Cup, had six minutes in the last game, a half against the Swiss, he looked brillint when he came. What a pity.
Switzerland set up a tie with Argentina in the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup. Will be a tough game for them but the only thing going for them is that Argentina have an equally awful defence. They have an outside chance at most.
