ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: South Korea
South Korea, are back again for another world cup tryout, their eight consecutive campaign. In not the hardest group, they might be feeling positive ahead of their games in Group H.
Group H will be a very closely contested group. I would imagine that Belgium will top it but for Russia, Korea and Algeria second place is all to play for. Advantage for Korea is that they are playing Belgium last, which might be a bonus if Belgium have already topped the group by that stage. Korea could sneak a draw and qualify.
If you look at their squad they have few stand out players but it is a squad that has a good bit of European footballing experience. Only six of the squad are home based which tells you the direction that Korea is going in terms of improving their national team. One of those Koreans abroad is Key player is Son Heung Min who has scored a few crackers this season in the Bundesliga. Will he be able to score against what is likely three teams, Belgium, Russia and Algeria, who have very tight defensive makeups.
I have to sit on the fence with this one. Korea could do well and get out of the group, but on the other hand they might bomb and come last. Their first game against the fired up Russian’s is key. Lose that and they are out of the world cup. I can’t see them doing a whole lot in the world cup, but they might surprise as they have progressed past the group stage in two of the last three editions. So beware of the Taeguk Warriors
