PreGame:
Italy: Will Italy go home early again? They went out in the first round in South Africa. Are they about to repeat that feat here.
Italy’s superior goal difference means they need only a draw in Natal to join Costa Rica in the last 16. The Italians, are experts at closing out games and playing for draws, but in the last game they were way off the pace as they struggled with the heat and humid conditions. The big question is have they recovered from this game in time to get a result against an ever improving Uruguayan team?
Costa Rica made the Italian defence look really ordinary. Now I know this defence had serious question marks pre tournament, but still you would reckon that basic defending is one thing the Italians would get right before a World Cup campaign. But they were all over the place in this game. Particularly hopeless was Abate who was having a nice stroll around all evening in the park, not working up too much of a sweat. The mighty Chiellini was also made to look mightily ordinary and Buffon in goals was a bit wobbly. They will have to work well tonight though as one thing is for sure is they have to stop Suarez from scoring. Something England could not do, twice.
Up front Balotelli was petulant, stroppy, and not much use to his team. Missed a few relatively easy chances in the game and also got a yellow card for a cynical challenge after he lost the ball. Can he have his head screwed on for tonight’s game please?
Pirlo also wasn’t his usually self in the last game, did very little and was not able to lift his team in what was, overall, a very poor performance from Italy.
They will all have to click right today to get out of the group, but with another hot evening ahead of them, they might just wilt again under the hot Brazilian sky.
Uruguay: Suarez is back and scored two brilliant goals against England and was a massive difference to his team. He looks in great form at the moment, and the Italian defence will have to show total concentration to keep him off the score sheet tonight.
Overall, Uruguay’s game against the English showed a much better team performance They were tighter in defence and really England didn’t trouble them too much, the usual short spells of pressure but not sustained, and easy to contain.
Tonight is the biggie for them. Win and they are in the last 16 with a possible tie against Colombia or Ivory Coast/Greece, and a real chance of making the last 8 of this years World Cup. That would be the icing on the cake for a great season of top football from Suarez. He definitely has a goal in him this evening.
A more detailed review on Italy here and on Uruguay here
Only saw highlights of this game as was watching Costa Rica V England, the other game of this group.
Uruguay scored a dramatic late winner to knock Italy out of the World Cup, but no one will remember that. What they will remember is Luis Suarez and that ‘biting’ incident.
As a youngster the young Suarez headbutted a referee during a stoppage in play because he disagreed with his decisions during the game.
With Ajax he had a nibble on PSV’s Bakkal’s shoulder and was suspended for seven games
With Liverpool, he was suspended for 10 games for biting Chelsea’s Branislov Ivanovic on the arm, and also had an unsavoury racist incident with Manchester United Evra.
So Suarez’s actions today, where he had a bite of Chiellini’s shoulder isn’t without form. He is definitely clocking up the suspensions and bans. So to be fair to FIFA they had no option but to hand out another ban for the increasingly crazy hit-man.They have suspended him from all football-related activity for four months which of course means the end of his World Cup and puts him out of action for the start of Liverpool’s first nine games of the upcoming season. He was also fined 100,000 Swiss francs (£65,680) for the incident, which is about four weeks work.
The big shame should be to the Uruguayan FA and to his fellow team mates who bleat and cheat, but don’t seem to want to help Suarez, the man. Suarez needs psychiatric help, he has mental problems, that need to be fixed. Empty platitudes from the likes of Maradona or the Uruguayan president offer sweet f.a., because without real serious help I bet you any money Suarez will continue to the be destructive on the football field in the future.
As for Chiellini the big donkey. This is a good example of the evolution of Italian defending. I grew up watching Baresi, Costacurta and Maldini, players who tackled, played hard and were always honest in their endeavor. But Chilleini is a cunt, plain and simple. Could you even dare to imagine the great Franco Baresi in his prime rolling around the ground? No, beacuse he was a world class player, the best defender Italy has ever produced, quality. Man up!
Balotelli, another Italian player that could do with a good kick up the arse. Also a player that could join Suarez on a months therapy. He deserved to be sent off for his feet high challenge and was very lucky to only get a yellow for it. What a disappointing campaign that offered so much after the first game.
Marchisio deserved to go, and well done to the ref for spotting it. Was very silly from the Italian, and it didn’t help the cause to be sent off when his team needed him. Stupid.
Uruguay will now play Colombia at the Maracana on Saturday in the last 16 of the World Cup, but the controversy wont go away. Will be an interesting watch to see how Uruguay do without Suarez, and what way their players will react on the pitch. Lucky for Colombia though, very lucky!
