Get in you beauty, I will take that!!! Phew left it late though, but should have had it up way before the end, England always make it hard for themselves!!! Good man Kane.

As Tunisia is another Muslim nation where beer is hard to come by, I will be only drinking the one beer for the game. But what a beer that is, London Pride is a fantastic beer, and got to the final in my last World Cup, so will enjoy drinking it again today.

London Pride, excellent beer, really top class and so smooth and silky. Love this beer. One nil to the England!

PreGame:

Things appear to be a little different this time with England. Under Gareth Southgate their seems to be far less pressure and expectations on this team from the media and the general public. A team that qualified with relative ease, 8 points to spare and unbeaten, Southgate has done well since he took over the hot seat from Sam Allardyce.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: EnglandThere is a quiet confidence with this England team and the manager has also done very well to blood the team with a lot of new young players and letting some big names retire early. This is an England team without the big stars and big egos of English teams past. Wayne Rooney is finally gone, thank Christ, and there are no Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Owens type players to raise expectations. Ok Harry Kane could arguably fill that bracket, but he is still relatively unproven at international level, and with him we have Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Danny Rose and Dele Alli, a bunch of players who have had good seasons with their clubs the last few years,

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: IranTunisia: Their squad doesn’t show much to excite. A few players from the local Tunisian league and quite a few that play in France, but no stand put player. Added to this fact is that they will also be losing their main striker to injury, Youssef Msakni, the top scorer in the qualifying campaign, and that further dents any chances they might have had. In a group with Belgium and England I am sorry to say I dont expect a whole lot from Tunisia. Even in the Panama game, where they might be already out at that stage, they might struggle. I fear for them, I really do, sorry Tunisia!

Against Tunisia today I feel that England should have too much for them, I think they will have them for pace, especially down the flanks and with Kane, and perhaps Vardy, up front, they have two well established goalscorers who should be able to get on the score sheet against a relatively weak Tunisian defence.

A more detailed review on Tunisia here and on England here

Wow, England left it very late, always making it hard for their fans, but they got there in the end and deservedly got the three points. Would have been a complete travesty if they had not as I feel the penalty was a terrible decision and the ref never gave them much throughout the whole game. Tunisia were playing puke football all match and were lucky to even get one goal never mind a draw.

Started very brightly, Deli Alli was sprightly and on fire early on, while Sterling missed a complete sitter. England were strong in attack and caused Tunisia all sorts of problems that they couldn’t cope with. Sure enough England scored early, with a Stone header not saved well and Kane with the rebound. A real poachers goal.

Sterling wasn’t the only player with no shooting boots on, Lingard could have done better with his simple chances too. But just when you were thinking who is going to score the second goal for England, a penalty is giving to Tunisia for a rather innocuous challenge by Walker on Ben Youssef who fell to the ground like a sack of spuds. And the clowns in VAR still got it wrong. Never a penalty. If that is a penalty then the EPl would have about ten a game. Terrible decision by all involved. Tunisia’s Ferjani Sassi stepped up to equalize from the penalty spot. It was all the more galling that the ref kept missing how Kane was wrestled to the ground for virtually every corner (expect the last one funnily enough!)

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: EnglandThat penalty kind of rattled England a bit and they started to fanny around the pitch as they sometimes like to do, aimless balls and passing back and forth with no decisiveness. Always so frustrating to watch at times, these millionaire footballers so inept at playing what should be a simple game. Alli faded badly in the second, and Sterling was his usual crap self for England, and just when you were losing all hope to live, England get a corner, and to be honest you kind of felt they might jam in a goal from it. And they did. Kane again, good goal, great to get the space and England survive for another day.

To be fair to England they did well up against a very cynical and dirty Tunisian team and against a ref who gave them nothing in the game. They played well in patches, Stones in particular had a good second half, and when the chips were down they did step up and grind out that victory. I think that was a decent enough performance all things considering. They should steamroll Panama now, while Tunisia might be lucky to get a draw with a similar performance against Belgium, perhaps.

Jessenhofke RSRV (Belgium): V :London Pride (England) 2-1

Ok this was a battle royale between two great beer drinking nations. For Belgium we had some beers from the Jessenhofke brewery while for England there was the old reliable, London Pride.

Arvum, a Belgian Ale of 6%, went first. It was quite nice, a typical blond bier, looked fine, and was very tasty and the flavours stuck around for a while on the tongue. As much as I love London Pride, the Belgian Ale got this, one nil to Belgium.

London Pride is a solid pale ale, with lots of flavour, and was fairly easy to drink, a good session beer.  So for this reason I would give it a point/goal against Jessenhofke’s RGLR, a blond ale, which was fine but at 3.5% didn’t have the kick against the big boy here.  1-1.

So there was one more pair up to decide who would go through as leaders of the group. ‘t Bottelke, with its strange name, again up against LP. ‘t Bottelke again, a Belgian ale, 6% so not too much alcohol, but with a lot of taste and oh boy so smooth. Really enjoyed this beer, it was so silky on the tongue, and i would have loved to have had another one. London Pride couldn’t match the smooth flavours and feel of this little Belgian beaut. Belgian win 2-1.

London Pride, excellent beer, really top class and so smooth and silky. Love this beer. One nil to the England!

Jessenhofke RSRV (Belgium): V 😕 (Panama) 1-0

Had a Jessenhofke RSRV, a strong Trappist and abbey ale, and it was pure Belgian gold, very tasty and I pretty much enjoyed it and sipped it right through from half time to the 90th minute, like a long enjoyable meal. As there was no competition it was a a simple victory but boy did I enjoy that slow second half with my little Belgian ale.

                                ……………………………………………………………………………………

This is a tussle between two beer heavyweights, Belgium and England. For England back again for another Beer World Cup is last time finalist London Pride, and for Belgium we get Jessenhofke, with their selection of eco-friendly beers, and Kamil, a Belgian brewery that focuses on specialty and custom made beers. It will be interesting to see who takes top spot in this group. Tunisia and Panama disappoint as I couldn’t source any beers from these two nations.

Beers: Group F of Beer World Cup:

World Cup of Beer Group F

For today’s beer match up I have Corona, the laid back Mexican beer, up against Zombräu, a beer brought back from the dead!

Zombräu

V

Zombrau get the victory here, loads to taste, a slow burner and very enjoyable, whole Corona is nice enough but hasn’t enough kick to be considered a player.

PreGame:

Die mannschaft, Germany, definitely are hot favourites to repeat their 2016 win. They have a squad heavily loaded with top class players, not just the first eleven but a bench full of quality too. They won 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup with pretty much a second team. They ooze confidence as the Germans can only know, sure in the knowledge that they have what it takes to win the cup again. Ten out of ten in the qualifying can sure do great things for a squad.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: GermanyOk the squad have lost Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose and Manuel Neuer might be a bit out of form with a slow recovery from injury, but its still a squad with some serious amount of talent. Mats Hummels is still the rock in defence,  Toni Kroos has stepped forward to run the show in midfield, and Thomas Müller is sure to score up front (and dive like the bitch he is!). Added to that is the fact that big things are expected of Timo Werner who has scored aplenty in the Bundesliga, and PFA Young Player of the Year Leroy Sané, who likes to bomb it up the wings. But really the thing with the German squad is that they slot into positions so easily, they have plenty of talent in all areas of the field, and can afford to take the hit of an injury to the team. Its hard to pick any weaknesses in this team.

In the last six tournaments Mexico have made the last 16 but no more, playing good football along the way. But its like a mental thing that stops them from progressing to the last eight. Its not like they haven’t done it before, they have twice before in 1986 and in 1970, but for a team of the quality of Mexico, 32 years is a long time to break that barrier.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: Mexico Rafael Márquez is back for his fifth World Cup, yes his fifth! He is a wily old player, 39 to be exact, world class in his day, but I do wonder what the hell he is doing back with the team considering his two mistakes cost Mexico in the last World Cup and got them knocked out by the Dutch. Could he not have just let it go? Actually looking at the squad, it is quite an old squad, Héctor Moreno also a rock in defence (30), Andrés Guardado (31) and Giovani dos Santos (29) back in midfield and Javier Hernández (30) upfront. This will be the final swansong for a lot of the Mexican players on the world stage.

Mexico are one of those teams that always provide excitement and always play decent football that is easy on the eye. Unfortunately they sometimes forget about the defensive side of the gameCan they do it this time and finally make the last eight? I dont think so. For two good reasons. Germany and Brazil stand in their way of doing that. Today is a big test for them. Get a result against the Germans today and they have a massive chance, but that would be a huge achievement for them and to be honest not likely at all.

I fully expect Germany to put Mexico to the sword today. For sure Mexico wont make it easy for them, but I would imagine over the 90 minutes the Germans will come out on top, and also have a few goals in the bag too

A more detailed review on Germany here and on Mexico here

Ha ha well so much for tipping Germany, they just got suckered punched today by an extremely high octane Mexican team. Well done to Mexico on their victory, I was a little worried for them in near the end that they might rue all those chances they wasted, about 10 of them by my count, but no they held on for the victory.

Great goal by Lozano, brilliant to get the drag back and the space to rifle it home. Excellent move from the back, and in three lovely movements he was in.

Great game, can always rely on Mexico to entertain, they are relentless in their attack. Was great to hear the “ole ole” ringing out from the crowd, certainly they approved of the show the Mexican players had put on for them today.

Germany were disappointing, I wonder if Low regrets leaving Leroy Sané back home, as they could have done with his pace and vision today. I mean what the fuck is Khedira still plodding around in the team for, they have Ozil to do that rubbish.

Shout out to the Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa to was solid and kept a very cool head today.  Also great to see the legend that is Márquez equal the record of 5 WC appearances, brilliant stuff.

Brazil V Switzerland World Cup 2018

Brazil V Switzerland

(Synopsis in red)

Pregame bets:

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: SwitzerlandI fancy Brazil to do great things in this World Cup, to make the final at the minimum. But I think Switzerland, with their decent defence, might cause them a small hiccup at the start. Remember the Swiss also beat Spain at the start of W Cup 2010, and the Spanish ended up winning the thing, so they can throw a spanner in the works for sure. And the Swiss also got Xherdan Shaqiri who can muster up some magic, if bothered, hopefully today he might get his finger out of his ass.

€5.00 Single

Full betting review here>https://www.thisdrinkinglife.com/top-bets-of-the-world-cup-2018/

Well I was right in that Switzerland would cause them a hiccup, lol.

Beers: Group E of Beer World Cup:

World Cup of Beer Group E

Up for the Swiss we have a beer from the Dr. Brauwolf brewery, “where beer meets science”, an interesting concept for sure, up against a Brazilian classic Skol and the country’s favourite beer, in today’s beer match up.

V

Had a Rye IPA from the Dr. Brauwolf brewery and fuck me it was delicious, really great, one of the better beers of the last few days. Outstanding stuff. No competition for Skol. The Swiss win this one hands down.

PreGame:

I have to be honest I hate looking at Switzerland. Let me explain the reasons behind that hatred. In the last World Cup, they were thoroughly shocking. Did the bare minimum to get out of an easy group that included a poor Ecuador, and an even worse Honduras, and lost 5-2 to an average French team. But the worst for me was when they had a piss poor Argentina on the ropes for a good twenty minutes. They basically were playing touch football and toying with them while the crowd were doing ole ole’s from the stands. But the obscene thing is that after getting the better of the Argentinian midfield, they gave up, totally. Was truly an awful sight to see. Compare a team like Iceland to a team like Switzerland and you can understand what I am talking about, men versus boys. Ok to be fair some of their players played well, Rodríguez, Shaqiri, Fernandes all having a decent tournament, but as for the rest of their prima donas, meh!

But nothing seems to have changed as we can see from the qualifying game against Northern Ireland. They scrapped through largely thanks to a dodgy referee. Stephan Lichtsteiner, their captain, spent so much time rolling on the floor that his shirt was completely brown by the end of the game, while a lot of the Norn Iron team must be wondering how they let this one slip through their fingers. For me they are a team that are lazy and not bothered too much, a team that is also leaderless and easy to put to the sword with the slightest bit of pressure.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: SwitzerlandDon’t get me wrong, they have some seriously good players. Xherdan Shaqiri is world class, without a doubt, but Jesus can someone have a good chat with him and tell him to get his finger out. One can see the attitude with his club choices, from Bayern to a relegation bound Stoke tells us all you need to know here, in it for the money. Johan Djourou, Michael Lang, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Ricardo Rodríguez are all excellent players that work well together, but getting from defence to midfield is always a problem when you have such muck in the centre, Granit Xhaka and Valon Behrami are simply woeful. Gelson Fernandes is a gem in the centre but he is definitely a confidence player and needs to be clicking with his teammates to hit form. Shaqiri plays as an inside forward, and he needs to because they struggle to score goals. Breel Embolo is a big lump of nothingness up front, I still laugh at how great a deal FC Basel did when they sold him off to Schalke, while Mehmedi, Derdiyok, Drmić and Seferović are all journeymen. So its a bit of hot and a lot of cold with this team. I find this disjointed team terribly frustrating to watch. And whats worse is that Vladimir Petković could have included a few of the Swiss champions Young Boys team in the squad. Kevin Mbabu for me should walk into that squad, even Christian Fassnacht or Steve von Bergen, but no not even one player makes the cut from the Swiss champs (as of going to press).

Brazil are the opposite to Switzerland. A team that plays with the right spirit of the game, with passion and a whole lot of heart. You would pay to watch them all day.

Will be very interesting to see if Brazil have exercised the demons of the last World Cup and the debacle with Germany. They certainly seem to be making the right noises, topped the qualifying in record time, a settled squad, Neymar back to his best, a manager, Tite, who is prepared to let the players express themselves and coming into some decent form at the right time.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: BrazilAll eyes will be on Neymar today but I am looking forward to seeing Liverpool ace, Roberto Firmino, and also Gabriel Jesus of Man City. Both players having great seasons in the EPL. Both the whole squad looks decent and although my heart skipped a beat when I saw the name Fred, rest assured it is a new younger Fred who plays in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk, phew!

But having said all that Switzerland still could get a result today against Brazil. They could bring Brazil down to their level of puke football and with Xherdan Shaqiri they always have a chance of scoring, more likely from a dead ball situation. Now I dont expect them to win (albeit they did beat Brazil a few years ago), but they could eek out a draw.

A more detailed review on Brazil here and on Switzerland here

“Now I dont expect them to win (albeit they did beat Brazil a few years ago), but they could eek out a draw”, lol. Exactly!

Great game, end to end, and some stout defending from Switzerland near the finish to hold out for a magnificent draw.

Started off ominous for the Swiss as it was all Brazil at the start, pacey and dominant, and sure enough it wasn’t long before they got on the score sheet with a brilliant goal from Coutinho who curled a lovely goal in off the post, brilliant finish.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: SwitzerlandBut after the while the Brazil attack petered out and Switzerland came more into the game, and got the equaliser from a free header. They played well, the Swiss and even though I am not one of his greatest fans, Behrami gave a world class performance today, top stuff. Their defence also held out very well today, Sommer was strong in goals, and we only got the two dives from Lichtsteiner today. I wonder is he not well?

Good call from the ref on giving the goal, it was too slight a push, and also he got the penalty call correct, no way was that a peno for Brazil. Good referring  through the game today,

Nice one Switzerland!

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: Costa RicaExpect Costa Rica to continue where they left off at the last World Cup, hopefully with more goals and more great counter attacking football that won them so many admirers in 2014. Serbia are muck so I wouldn’t be surprised to see CR grab a few here.

Hold my hands up, got that prediction totally wrong.

Beers: Group E of Beer World Cup:

World Cup of Beer Group E

Imperial Beer, the “little eagle” from Costa Rica will be up against a Serbian craft beer kabinet beer. Might be an interesting tussle.

Bit of a contrast in beer styles, an IPA versus a regular lager, but I will go with the Imperial Lager as it was easier to stomach, what with the Kabinet that bit too hoppy for my liking

PreGame:

Little Costa Rica were my favourite team in the last World Cup, playing some great counter attacking football, with passion and no fear for the big names, going on an amazing run that was just about halted by the Dutch in a penalty shootout in the last eight of the World Cup. Brilliant. I’d settle for even half of that excitement again!

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: Costa RicaKeylor Navas and Joel Campbell made names for themselves in the last World Cup and are back again for another adventure. Otherwise they dont really have any other stand out players in the squad. But is that any different to last time round? I certainly didn’t expect them to get up to much in 2014 and they ended up causing shock after shock, so who knows what gems lie in their squad this time round.

I fully expect Costa Rica to give Serbia a hard time today, and wouldn’t be at all surprised if they came away with all three points. They really need to start with a win, as they have Brazil up after and I fear for them in that game.

Had the displeasure of watching, on the box, Serbia’s two games versus the Republic of Ireland in the qualifiers. Serbia drew at home, 2-2 and won 1-0 in Dublin, but overall they didn’t play well at all. They looked very brittle and disjointed and although they had some good technical players they were not a team that I think I would cause too many problems for more established teams like Germany and co.

They have some quality in the squad though, most notably Nemanja Matic of Liverpool, Luka Milivojević of Palace, Nemanja Matić of Man United, and lastly Aleksandar Mitrovic on fire for promotion champions Fulham, scoring 12 out of 17 games. Good players for sure, but can they gel together for Serbia on the big stage? They also have some of the squad from their Under 20 World Cup winning team so that should help.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: Serbia

But these top players mostly play well for their clubs, they can fit into systems and formations in the various leagues around Europe, but they never seem to click for their national team, and I dont expect them to do so in this World Cup. I dont fancy them at all.

A more detailed review on Costa Rica here and on Serbia here

Costa Rica really never got motoring today, and the Serbian central defence were rock solid. Fair dues to Serbia, got the win and now look to forward to getting another point in the next two games to have a real chance of progression.

Started off lively for both teams, chances at both ends inside the first ten minutes, with Costa Rica having a real chance in the 13th minute with a free header that they really should have scored from.

But Costa Rica were fannying around for long spells of the game, not really doing anything of substance, particularly Guzmán who was awful and should have got substituted much earlier than the 72nd minute. He also gave away the silly free that lead to the goal. Costa Rica were also quite a dirty team, constantly fouling every time they didn’t have the ball.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: SerbiaAnd what a goal it was from Kolarov, excellent goal. If he hadn’t of scored I doubt Serbia would have got a goal at all, as they missed a few simple chances today and they didn’t seem to have their shooting boots on.

The central defence of Serbia were brilliant, in fact the whole back four were quite solid. It was going to take a lot of skill to get behind them and unfortunately Costa Rica didn’t have that today.

Celestial Brewery (Switzerland): V :Imperial Lager (Costa Rica) 1-0

Celestial Brewery make a winning start, nice one. Had a really interesting taste, hoppy and full of flavour, was nice to sip through while looking at the football. Hard luck to Imperial, a nice lager, but no match for a tasty IPA.

Soo Soors beer (Switzerland): V :kabinet beer (Serbia) 1-0

Soo Soors and their golden ale was very silky and smooth, easy to drink, while Kabinet was equally impressive, and for an IPA pretty quaffable (for me!). Close, really close, but will have to give it to the Swiss, just like in the football, just that bit more creative.

Celestial Brewery

Celestial Brewery

Brewed by Brasserie Celestial
Neuchâtel, Switzerland

https://celestial.ch/

Celestial Brewery

Celestial Brewery, or to give its true name, Brasserie Celestial, is located not far off the La Tène Beach, on the western shore of Lake Neuchâtel, the French-speaking centre of Switzerland.

It is a new venture in the region and one with many exciting and ambitious plans. Founded by Peter Danielsson who had a dream to start his own brewery. Despite been in the software industry and a general “newbie” in the beverages industry, he finally managed to take the plunge in 2017 and set up a small brewing operation.

I say ambitious and exciting, as Celestial Brewery are producing a wide selection of great beers to the public, something that as a new brewery is quite brave, but I guess they must be very confident in the deliciousness of their brews. A wide selection of beers on offer include, some very interesting IPA’s, to a bière blanche (a white beer), an amber beer, and a coffee flavoured black beer.

So far the reception from the public has been very positive, proof that sometimes your dreams are worth pursing, and it is great to see an new brewery doing well in my adopted country of Switzerland. Bonne Chance!

Review: 33cl Bottle of Celestial, Le 7eme Ciel, India Pale Ale: 6.1% ABV

Translates into “7th Heaven” in English. Coming in a black bottle with some very dark imagery.

On pour got loads of carbonation, bubbling along, taking a little while for it all to settle down. What remained was a very frothy white head with a golden coloured beer.
Some good lacing as you would expect.
Not a bad looking beer when it all settled down.

Smell is malty, with an interesting floral, earthy, and piney smell. Also get the fruits and citrus.

On the taste, got a lots of hops in it hitting you from the start.

Nice big mouthfuls, with the hops lingering on the tongue.

Some fruit in background.

It’s strong enough for sure with the bitterness in the flavours there, but manageable enough to enjoy.

It is a regular IPA but you do get a more pronounced earthy and piney taste that kind of distinguishes it from other IPA’s, which I really liked. Stronger to taste.

Interesting beer, not sure what to think about it, has me a bit stumped. It is definitely a very tasty beer and with it some unique tastes for sure, but I would like to try this one again to give a better rating.

Not a bad beer and certainly worth checking out.

Review: 33cl Bottle of Celestial, Tène Out of Tène, Pale Ale: 5.1% ABV

Loving the name. Tène, of course, represents The La Tène (Celtic) period of time which was a European Iron Age culture named after the archaeological site of La Tène on the north side of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Clever!

Get a very hazy looking beer with a nice golden orange look. Very carbonated and has a big frothy head. Good lacing.
Has a very hearty appearance which looks very appetizing.

Smell is quite strong, Oh, very strong tropical fruit aromas. Good stuff!

Taste is hoppy, IPA style, overloaded with the tastes of fruits, and I also get the malty flavour.
It is an alright beer, crisp in taste, well balanced, refreshing and does the business, goes down the hatch decent enough.

Liking the fruity taste to it, and although the hops are there they are very manageable. Nice and soft on the tongue.

Find it a very filling beer, and not a bad one from Celestial here.

Review: 33cl Bottle of Celestial, L’êlektron Libre, an Amber beer: 5.0% ABV

“Free Electron” in English, I guess the electricity will be bouncing around your body when in contact with this beer, firing up an unstoppable current of energy and pleasure. Perhaps!

A lovely frothy white head of beer, with a darkish cherry colour, on the pour. Looks nice. Actually looks better than that, looks fantastic!

Head maintains well, with some very good lacing apparent. Deep red hues run throughout the colour. it is definitely a good looking beer. Very inviting, just waiting to be drank.

A very toasty aroma, must be the caramelized malt which is great on the nose.

Getting the caramelized malt again, this time in the taste, making this beer very nice to drink.
This is a real craft beer, with the hops and the malts to the fore.

It is quite hoppy, but very manageable. Was very easy to drink.

Enjoyable and a beer that goes down very easily, with flavours that are both tasty and delicious.

Not a huge array of exotic flavours but what they do have in abundance, tasty malts, is good enough for me to give this beer the thumbs up.

Review: 33cl Bottle of Celestial, L’Intemporelle Blanche, a Belgian style witbier: 5.0% ABV

Translates to “Timeless”, the beer is styled as a Belgian witbier.

Hazy cloudy yellow golden colour, very carbonated and the frothy white head maintains.
Looks ok.

Smell is very fruity and sweet, quite strong on the nose.

Nice initial mouthfuls, very fruity in taste and quite appealing and delicious on the old taste buds.

Filling and hearty, went down well.

Yeah, a very nice beer, delicious, and the fruits coming out very strong in this beer.

Sweet, and a typical wheaty and expected coriander taste with a bitterness that isn’t going to bother. A decent beer that was enjoyable enough to drink. Not bad.

Review: 33cl Bottle of Celestial, Celestial, L’autre Monde, a coffee stout: 6.8% ABV

Celestial, L’autre Monde, “The Other World” in English. On the bottle I translated, “We can not please everyone – and do not try it! Our beers are uncompromising and push the limits of the stylistic requirements to accede to intense and expressive tastes. important notice: drinkers of tasteless bees to be absent!” Bit ballsy, lol!

On pour, massive carbonation, all over the place, very temperamental. All resulting in a massive frothy tanned head and a pitch black stout.

When it finally all settled down it looked pretty good.

Head maintained throughout, and some good lacing.

Aroma is the usual smell of a stout, a little sour as well.

Taste is very interesting. The chocolate taste is very prominent, like a rare dark chocolate, and sure enough I see on their website that they have used “Tree frog” an aromatic dark coffee from one of their local suppliers in Neuchâtel. This taste is quite strong, so now I see why they put the “disclaimer” on the bottle, ha!

Bit too bitter and strong for my liking, but it definitely is an interesting flavour.

Not a bad stout, not as layered as a Guinness but that’s not what it is going for, the hops are intense and the coffee and corn all contribute to a stout that has a good strong kick in it.
Worth a try for sure.

Review: 33cl Bottle of Celestial, Le Dernier Cri, a New England style IPA: 7.7% ABV

“The Last Cry” in English, this is Celestial’s version of a New England IPA. A New England IPA is meant to be a little smoother with less of a hoppy bitterness to their West Coast IPA cousins, the appearance is also meant to be a little hazier.

Very carbonated, jeez mad to come out of the bottle! A cloudy looking dark orange beer, with a very frothy head. Some lacing.

Malty and fruity smell, faint though.

Smooth creamy mouthfuls, goes down easy enough.

Not meant to be too hoppy, but I certainly got the hoppy taste, but not that bitter and very manageable.

Nice malty flavour, the fruits to the fore, bit of caramel.

I know that there is some who dont think New England IPA is a style in its own right. I am not so sure, but this beer here just seems like a regular IPA to me, albeit toned down a bit and more cloudy in appearance and feel. I am not getting that distinct style though.

A safe brew that’s not going to set the world alight, but this beer is not bad, is drinkable, and did the business.

Corona get the victory, as once again I couldn’t really get any discernible taste at all from Crocodile. As light as Corona is, its still a relativity nice drink on a very hot summers day.

Döllnitzer Ritterguts Gose (Germany): V :?(South Korea) 1-0

The Döllnitzer Ritterguts Gose was very interesting, got me well giddy, but that could be seeing Germany crash out of the football World Cup. Good news, Germany are still in Thisdrinkinglife’s Beer World Cup.

? (South Korea): V :Corona (Mexico): 0-1

Corona to win, no beer from Korea, even gave the hot noodles a miss today, no thanks!

Brauer & Co (Germany): V :Crocodile lager (Sweden) 1-0

Had an imaginably titled, Funky Forelle Pils (Funky trout!) from the Brauer & Co from Leipzig in Germany, a fine beer, had good hoppy tastes and was nice to sip, too fine for the Crocodile beer of Sweden that still disappoints. Germans win again!

Crocodile lager (Sweden): V :?(South Korea) 1-0

Crocodile lager was pretty shite, no taste or flavour detected at all. Glorified water. Still it was better than the noodles from Korea that were so hot that I could only eat half or less of them. Crocodile just about.

Corona (Mexico): V :Zombrau (Germany) 0-1

Zombrau get the victory here, loads to taste, a slow burner and very enjoyable, while Corona is nice enough but hasn’t enough kick to be considered a player.

                                  ……………………………………………………………………………………

One would imagine that Germany, who won my inaugural Beer World Cup in 2014, will have another top tournament. It is Germany, and they do beer. They will get out of this group no bother. Sweden are not a great beer nation, while Mexico mostly concentrates on tequilas, and for Korea I couldn’t source any beer this time round.

Döllnitzer Ritterguts Gose

Brauer & Co., Funky trout and Pretty sperm whale!

Zombräu

Zombräu

Crocodile Lager

Corona

Couldn’t source any beer from Korea. Did last time, but that restaurant is now closed and surprisingly enough there are no more Korean eateries in town. Plenty of Chinese, Thai and Japanese but no Korean, which is strange. So some noddles it is then!!

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: Denmark

Peru V Denmark World Cup 2018

Peru V Denmark

(Synopsis in red)

Pregame bets:

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: SwitzerlandI reckon Peru will be a little overawed in their first World Cup outing since ’82, while Denmark, for me, are a serious outfit with a quality team that could propel them into the last eight. I really fancy this Danish team to go far in the tournament, and with C Ericksen they have a player that can turn a game on its head. This is an easy bet for me, Denmark to win their opener, and with relative ease.

Phew needed that win, was very lucky what with the peno miss and Denmark holding on for dear life in the end. Phew!

   V

Cusqueña was a bit tasteless, while Carlsberg was all taste, but I am not sure if it was the kind of taste I like. Still that’s better than nothing, so a narrow victory to Carlsberg.

PreGame:

Denmark, in Dublin, against the Irish team winning 5-1, and really turning on a spectacular show of attacking football, certainly made the world sit up and take notice. For sure Ireland were rubbish, but they did take the lead and looked like they might do something in the first twenty minutes or so. The quick turnaround shows how strong the Danes were. They can easily adapt to all sorts of games, from high tempo attack, to playing the long ball, to digging out a win by all means necessary. The physical side of things and the more technical game, both are no problem to this team.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: DenmarkThey have the players to do this. Simon Kjær, in defence, is a joy to watch at times, especially when he starts pinning 50 yards passes up to his strikers, passing deep from his own defence. While Christian Eriksen, on form, can be lethal, not just at shooting but also his general linkage play is excellent. In Pione Sisto they also have someone who can run at defences and cause general mayhem in the opposition box. Yes, I really like this Danish team. A squad that is well used to the tough European leagues and should have no problem in dealing with a relatively inexperienced Peru team. I can only see Denmark winning here.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: PeruPaolo Guerrero is allowed to play, and that is good news for Peru. They will need their top striker as they have three relatively tough games to maneuver in this World Cup. I dont know a whole lot about this team, but with the canny Ricardo Gareca, back again for a third World Cup, as manager, I am sure they are a well drilled team open to playing attacking football. His teams generally play an expansive game, but this might be their undoing, as against Denmark they probably should play a slow patient waiting game. Can they play a game that requires this? I am not so sure. I would imagine the Danes would rattle their cages very quickly and attack them from the start. I can see a long 90 minutes in store today for Peru.

A more detailed review on Peru here and on Denmark here

Wow, unlucky for Peru, they did pretty much everything but score. How many chances did they need, and a penalty yet they still lost this game, unlucky. They were lively throughout and had a rake of chances yet didn’t hit the back of the net. It does make you wonder that perhaps maybe they should have had Guerrero on earlier?

The less said about the penalty the better, but here look Messi missed one today as well so its not like its not normal to miss them.

Was very disappointed with Denmark, they were very lethargic, Eriksen was woeful, Sisto had bags of energy but no vision, while N Jørgensen is an embarrassment to forwards everywhere, lazy fucker.

But they were lucky that Poulsen was on form today. he had a great game, definitely a man of the match performance, pacing up and down the pitch, scoring a cracker of a goal and also got in a very decisive header near the end to clear the defence. Brilliant work ethic.

Denmark can relax a bit now, knowing they have the 3 points in the bag and get to meet Australia next, while Peru have to face France, but who knows if they play as well as they did today they might have an outside chance of a result.

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: France

France V Australia World Cup 2018

France V Australia

Pregame bets:

(Synopsis in red)

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: AustraliaDo not rate Australia at all. In the Confederations Cup they were truly awful to see, no technical ability with a lot of plodders in the team. Not only that but they carry on the great Australian sporting tradition of whinging a lot. That is not going to work against a French team that will be fired up to put on a show, especially after the feast of football we were served last night between Spain and Portugal. Now its France’s turn and I am sure they wont want to disappoint!

I think that as they are such a cynical team, the Aussies might get a man sent off. They might as well as they wont be playing any football.

Ok got the Griezmann goal thanks to the ref, Giroud wasn’t on long enough to do anything, and to be fair to the Australians they were not as hot tempered as I expected. Still, considering how awful France played, I am more than happy to come away with something from this game.

Kronenbourg 1664 from France to take on the much maligned “Aussie beer” Fosters

               V

Was expecting on even enough game, but Fosters kind of surprised me as I enjoyed drinking it, was smoother, and very quaffable. Both lagers didn’t have a whole lot in way of tastes or flavours, so it was all done to general drinkablity and for this reason I give the victory to Fosters.

PreGame:

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: FranceFrance: Deschamps has assembled a fantastic squad yet again. Last time they were oh so close and this year they might just go one better, and win the damn thing! They have a very strong squad, with a loot of technical players, but sometimes it can be hard to get them to gel as a team, but Deschamps is finally getting them to play as a unit. He has one again made France a team to be reckoned with, and for this we must congratulate him.

I think the pace of the French attack will obliterate the Aussies defence. Add in a striker on form then I can see a lot of goals today against a piss poor Aussie team. Griezmann is on form again and he is always running and harrying away in games. I feel he will have far too much for this Australian team.

Iceland are not a great technically gifted team, but they play with real team spirit and generally play the game in the right spirit. Australia are also lacking in decent players but, unlike the Icelanders, they are a dirty cynical team with players who argue with the ref every ten minutes and who also like to partake on a roll on the floor now and again. I dont know why they have to play like this. Now I could be totally wrong but this is the way they played in the Confederation Cup. Ok they have a new man in charge now, but its Bert van Marwijk, the man who set the rot into Dutch football and will be remembered as getting one of the most horrible Dutch teams of all times into a final where they proceeded to kick and hack Spain all game. I can only imagine how much more cynical the team might be now!!

ThisDrinkingLife and The World Cup: AustraliaOk they have the great Tim Cahill, but he is 38, and I am not so sure he can last more than 30 minutes without bursting a lung. Will be a long 90 minutes for the Aussies.

A more detailed review on France here and on Australia here

What a god damn awful game. France were pathetic, and Australia defended well but maybe, just maybe, they are thinking if they had went for it a bit more perhaps they might have gotten more from the game?

The referee was hopeless all through the match and had a lot to play in this game. I dont think that was a penalty that he gifted France, a slight touch, and VAR is a load of bollix if that is whats going to decide games in the future.

Australia can consider themselves unlucky, but then they also didn’t do a whole lot going forward. Was impressed with their goalkeeper Ryan who linked very well with his back four. Behich and Mulligan also stood out in defence, but wilted a little in the second half.

On the opposite side, France had a whole team of passengers. Pavard, as right back, looked way out of his depth, was embarrassing to see, while the big names of Mbappé, Dembélé and Pogba, and Matuidi when he came on, were awful, truly awful. And what is with Hernández, what is with the little bitch rolling round the floor over the slightest touch, and he is a defender, ffs!!  Mark Lawrenson said on the Beeb, that “the French are going backwards”, well where have we heard that before, what a fucking EMBARRASSMENT! Pogba doing flicks in the 67th minute when his team needs a leader on the pitch, then kissing his badge when he scored a fluky goal, what a cunt!

Deschamps messed up a bit today with his team selection, but to be fair to the man, who can he bring on to change things, its a general malaise in french football I think. I know I would be tearing my hair out if I was the manager.

Australia played well in patches, but its so hard to say what they are really like as France were so turgid, and perhaps the fact they let a really poor french team beat them might say a lot about where they are at the moment.
