Need a winner!

Pregame bets:
Holland -2 8/5
Tim Cahill 9/2
Robben to score a/t 11/10
Holland h/t and f/t 4/6
Over 2.5 goals 8/15

Back in the game with some of these good bets. Cahill scored a cracker, always worth a punt on him. Same with Robben, considering the top form he is showing at the moment. Another easy goal bet as well. Nice

australiaNETHERLAND TWOVictoria Bitter V Mongozo Fruit Beer: 2-0 Comfortable victory for VB. Mongozo is a lovely sweet tasting fruit beer, with a tinge of malt aftertaste that settles well. But VB wins with its famous creamy aftertaste which the more I drink of the more I am getting to really like it. PreGame:

Australia: Played very well in the last game against Chile and could easily have got a result in the end.

Australia are a very well coached team that can attack down the flanks putting in some crosses that could unsettle the Dutch defence tonight.

tim_CahillCahill is a real threat and brilliant in the air. I am sure he will get a few good headers tonight, maybe hit the crossbar again. Point is he always looks like scoring from a cross.

Australia are unlucky that after a tough first opener it doesn’t get any easier, and will have to face the Robben and Persie double act, on form and raring to go. If they can keep it nil nil to half time they will have done well.

Netherlands: Unstoppable in the last game against the World Champions, in a game they played with style and panache. They will like to keep it going forward tonight against Australia. I really cant see them letting off steam and expect more of the same.

van_PersieRobben and Van Persie were flawless in the last game. That van Persie goal was as good a headed goal as you are ever likely to see. And Robben’s speed and agility on the ball caused all sorts of problems for the Spanish defence.  Least we forget Blind who was not only good in his defensive duties but brilliant going forward. Surely either Robben or Persie will get on the score sheet against Australia.

Win tonight and the Dutch are in the next round. Would be a brave man to bet on the Aussies causing an upset, it wont happen.

A more detailed review on Australia here and on Netherlands here

The Netherlands secured a last 16 place and the Aussies are out.

Australia The Australians played well and asked the Netherlands some serious questions about their defence, getting behind the Dutch back four on numerous occasions, scoring twice. Of course there is also the point that Australia are a bit better than a lot of the teams in this world cup. I don’t think the Netherlands will get as tough a game for a short while now or play a team as physical as the Aussies, maybe if they meet Italy in a quarter final game perhaps, but not Chile/Mexico/Brazil/Croatia.

Cahills’ goals is what every kid dreams of. Can imagine youngsters trying it out on the football fields during the weekends. A beautiful volley top corner, brilliant. Reminded me of the great vans Basten all those years ago.

The peno was soft. A few decisions now in these world cup games are questionable. Hopefully as the tournament progresses referring will get better.

Schneider is a surprise in this world cup. He has a tendency to ball watch and not many of his passes are on target. He had an awful game against Australia. It’s such a dip in form for a once great player. That’s two games in which his team has won and he contributed very little. I would drop him to be honest, to win a world cup you don’t need passengers.

Netherlands The Netherlands strength is their attacking play. They have the fire power to score goals. It doesn’t matter if they let in two, they will just score three, and outscore every team. Goals wins games, and the Dutch have the top two strikers in the world cup, the van Persie Robben double act, mean and keen. (Cough, Newcastle and Kevin Keegan!)

The Netherlands have Chile up next. With both teams through to the second round, the game is to see who wants to play either Brazil or Mexico/Croatia in the next round. I would use this game to play some of the fringe members of the squad, give them a run out. It’s a bit of a dead rubber game, but will be a good watch all the same, as both teams play delightful attacking game. Is it better to play Brazil or Mexico? I think the Netherlands would beat both to be honest, so this last game has no real meaning for them.

The Aussies have heart, always trying their utmost. It’s such a pity that Australia got a really tough group. that’s two world cups now that Australia have rotten groups. Fifa should give them a handy one for the Russian world cup. But at least most of the squad is young and if they keep to their game plan of learning Dutch style close control football that their FA initiated a while back, the future looks very bright for them.

Australia have to play Spain. Spain are playing for their pride. It would be some story if Spain lost all three of their games. But Cahill is out for the Aussies and, without their star player, it will be tough to beat the (soon to be former) World Champions!
